Ceremonies of Peace:
yoko ono: makoto fujimura

In June 2006, before our official opening, Wallspace was one of the two venue for the exhibition Ceremonies of Peace: yoko ono : makoto fujimura, two site-responsive art installations for the City of London Festival 2006. Makoto Fujimura’s installation Making Peace combined paintings using Japanese medieval materials from the Nahonga tradition, with video images taken from Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Fujimura is based in Manhattan, New York and made the work in response to his experience of the tragedy of 9/11. He describes Making Peace as ‘memories of Ground Zero; realities of the world, layered with the healing, sanctifying flames of God, inspired by Dante’s Divine Comedy and T.S. Eliot’s Four Quartets.’
