An English painter, born in Berkshire in 1891. Much of his greatest work depicts biblical scenes, from miracles to the crucifixion, happening not in the Holy Land, but in Cookham, the small village where he was born and spent most of his life. He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1950 and Knighted in 1959. He died in 1959.
